BLOG | How to check if a doctor is Board Certified in Mexico?

Updated: Feb 28

"In Mexico, just as anywhere else in the world, physicians that are not trained to practice plastic surgery can try to deceive patients. Any licensed doctor or physician can claim to be a “cosmetic doctor”, so the importance of finding a reputable Board certified plastic surgeon for your procedure is VITAL!" said "Sofía Murel - Managing Director at TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico".

How can you verify your plastic surgeon’s Credentials and Board Certifications as well as verify the surgical facility accreditations in Mexico?

If you would like to check if your Surgeon is Board Certified in Mexico, check the web site of the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugia Plastica, Estetica y Reconstructiva. If you want to check what facilities are approved in Mexico, you will need to check the web site for the COFEPRIS that regulates the hospitals and clinics in Mexico. The first and most important step is to ask your doctor his medical license number, called cédula profesional in Spanish. This is not enough, and you must also ask for their Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery (AMCPER) certification.

In Mexico, the AMCPER is the highest plastic surgery board, similar to the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

You can also check the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva, A.C.

- Go to the website https://www.cmcper.org.mx/

- Click on “Especialistas Certificados” to check whether a doctor is board certified by Mexican Board of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.

What is the Meaning of Board Certification?

A board certified plastic surgeon by The Mexican Board of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, assures that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed at least 6 years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education. This includes a minimum of 6 years of residency training in all areas of surgery, including at least 3 years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Certification is a voluntary process a surgeon seeks after this training.

To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams.

A "Board-Certified cosmetic surgeon" or a “Board-Certified aesthetic surgeon” is NOT a “Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon”

Many doctors marketing themselves as “cosmetic” surgeons do procedures beyond the scope of their training. The problem is that most of patients don’t know the difference between a “board-certified Aesthetic or cosmetic surgeon” and a board-certified Plastic Surgeon.

Many patients falsely assume that a surgeon only need to be board-certified to perform plastic surgery procedures.

“Cosmetic surgery – is NOT just another way of saying Plastic Surgery”.

Doctors who advertise themselves as certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) don't measure up to meet the criteria required for board-certified plastic surgeons.

Before & After SMAS FaceLift

"In recent years, there have been several reports of Boctched procedures performed by “board certified physicians”. But after thorough verification we see that most of Botched procedures were coming from offices that don’t belong to plastic surgeons and most of physicians who performed such procedures have not gone through plastic surgery residency, and are not qualified as Board Certified Plastic Surgeons".

Why are some surgeons not Board Certified Plastic Surgeons?

Any licensed doctor or physician can claim to be a “cosmetic doctor”.

There’s a growing trend for physicians with other specialties performing cosmetic procedures after taking weekend courses. This is dangerous, and it’s alarming board-certified plastic surgeons.

In many countries, physicians who are not Board Certified in Plastic Surgery state they are “Board Certified” without specifying by whom they are certified. They advertise plastic surgery but only have a Board in another field, such as General Surgery or Gynecology, or may make statements such as “Cosmetic Surgery Board Certified”, “Board Certified by the State Medical Board” etc.

Therefore, Do not be afraid or feel shy about asking your doctor about their Board Certification because for most of physicians such as Otolaryngologists, Gynecologists, Ophthalmologists, Dermatologists, OMFS, internal doctors, Pediatrics, etc... carry out a plastic surgery procedure is considered "out of scope".

As explained above, a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon must have at least six years of surgical training, including completion of an accredited plastic surgery training program. They must perform thousands of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery procedures of different types, pass rigorous written and oral examinations and commit to continuing education and assessment throughout their careers.

However, an American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) has to complete only one year of surgical training, one written and oral examination completed during a single weekend, with NO continuing medical education requirements. Although complications can happen with any type of procedure; having a surgery performed by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon greatly reduce risks.

The meaning of board certified plastic surgeon is an indication that the specialist has completed an approved medical education program and an evaluation, including an examination designed to assess the knowledge, experience and skills necessary to provide high quality care in that specialty at the time the certificate is awarded.

"TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico in Mexico City aims to provide safe, ethical plastic surgeons with an extensive knowledge of the entire spectrum of plastic surgery, who are able to represent plastic surgery specialty in the highest standards for optimal results and patient satisfaction". said "Sofía Murel - Managing Director at TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico".

| How to find a reputable plastic surgeon in Mexico?

The importance of finding a reputable Board certified plastic surgeon for your procedure is VITAL! To find a good and reputable surgeon, the most important is to check:

1. What is the surgeon’s training?

You must be sure that the surgeon is trained and experienced in performing the procedure you are considering. Choosing an otolaryngologist (ENT) for a nose surgery or a gynecologist for a liposuction is a very risky decision.

2. Is the plastic surgeon certified?

The next step is to verify that the surgeon you have chosen for your procedure is a Board Certified and member of recognized national association of plastic surgery.

To practice any plastic surgery procedure in Mexico, your surgeon has to be member of the AMCPER Associación Mexicana de Cirugía Plastica Estetica y Reconstructiva (Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery)

You can also check if your surgeon is member of an International Association, such as ISAPS (The International Society of Plastic Surgery). ISAPS is the largest international society of individual plastic surgeons.

To become a member of ISAPS, your surgeon must be accepted by the national plastic surgery society in the country in which he currently practice. ISAPS Membership is by invitation and is granted to applicants only after extensive screening.

ISAPS membership ensures that your plastic surgeon is Nationally and Internationally Board Certified.

CMCPER is the largest Mexican society of individual plastic surgeons. Membership is by invitation and is granted to applicants only after extensive screening.

| Ibero-Latin American Federation of Plastic Surgeons FILACP

| ISAPS (The International Society of Plastic Surgery)

3. Check your surgeon’s experience!

All of them have from 20 to 30 years’ experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery and are qualified members of the most important Medical Boards in Mexico in the USA.

4. Check the place where your surgery will be performed

A Board certified plastic surgeons only operates in accredited hospitals and surgical centers and adheres to strict ethical guidelines. If a surgeon or practice is not upfront about where your surgery will be performed, don’t use him!

At TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico all the surgeries are performed by:

- The anesthesiologist stays with the patient throughout the surgery and until the patient is discharged from the recovery room.

- Two instrumentalist nurses.

“Our surgeons have worked with their medical staff for over 20 years. They have been involved in thousands of surgical cases.”

5. How the surgeon handles patient care during recovery?

If you are travelling to Mexico for plastic surgery, a reputable plastic surgeon will have to see you for follow-up visits at least once a week + a final visit 24h before you return home to ensure all is going well.
