How popular is plastic surgery in Mexico?
In 2020, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), 1,3 million plastic surgeries were carried out in Mexico!
With less than 2% of the world’s population, Mexico accounted for 11.3% of the cosmetic operations performed all over the world last year!
The reason why plastic surgery is so common is because the number of plastic surgeons per capita in Mexico is very high.
The second reason is that in the past 10 years, the country has grown economically, and women's salaries and disposable income have gone up increasing their financial power.
While in the USA and Europe it's something “shameful” to have an aesthetic procedure, in Mexico they flaunt it, because society pushes people to do it. Having a plastic surgery done in Mexico shows you care about yourself and it’s a higher social symbol.
Why do people prefer Mexico City get plastic surgery?
Mexico City has the best hospital structures in the country for plastic surgery, bringing safety and comfort to the patient. Many people from Tijuana, Cancun, travel to Mexico City to have a procedure done. "Most of our out of town patients make it clear that Mexico City surgeons are more concerned about the small details and are always looking for results beyond expectations." said Fabiana Rosen - Managing Director at TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico.
Where to get the safest and cheapest plastic surgery in Mexico?
These 3 cities offer international patients the best value for money for cosmetic treatments; getting high-quality plastic surgery at a lower price. This is actually the number one reason why 62% of international patients choose the Capital - Mexico City- to get a plastic surgery procedure in Mexico.
Private hospitals in Mexico City have established global standards of medical care, combined with advancements in technology; accredited by international organizations to prove their excellence.
In Mexico City you will find talented Board certified plastic surgeons who constantly come up with innovative new techniques to minimize scarring and maximize results. These techniques aim to make fewer incisions in order to maximize the safety of the patient while striving to still give incredible results.
However, achieving the best results from a plastic surgery depends on two important factors:
1. The skill level, experience, and artistry of the plastic surgeon performing the procedure.
2. How well each patient takes care of themselves after the procedure is done.
Is it safe to go to Mexico for plastic surgery?
Although any surgery has some degree of risk, even in the most capable hands; going to Mexico for plastic surgery is fairly common and very safe…if you do your homework!
According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS), the United States, Brazil, and Mexico are the top 3 countries when it comes to the highest number of plastic surgery procedures performed overall. But you can’t take for granted that you will receive the same level of safety and expertise everywhere you go in Mexico. So you have to be very careful. Don’t gamble on your safety or appearance to save money or “get a vacation out of the deal”. You could end up with serious problems with a negative impact for the rest of your life.
If you’re considering going to Mexico for a procedure, educate yourself about safe medical tourism place.
"Today, plastic surgery is Safer Than Ever! The possibility of at last having a surgery you have quite possibly wanted the majority of your adult life can make you dizzy with excitement, and no one is more excited to serve you than the Top Plastic Surgeons Mexico".

Our Board certified plastic surgeons use new technologies helping to make plastic surgery procedures safer than ever, reducing the possibility of human error... Although in many places, plastic surgeon’s office has the nurses or doctors on staff deliver anesthesia to patients. (These nurses and doctors were trained in delivering anesthesia, but they were not specialists). At our facility, we always opt to only offer our patients anesthesia delivered by an anesthesiologist. Our anesthesiologists are expert at administering anesthesia, doing everything necessary to make sure the patient is as calm, comfortable, and safe as possible. And because this is their specialty, patients can trust that they’re in good hands.
We are doing everything possible to make sure that patients are never forced to ask us, “Is plastic surgery safe?”
Said Sofía Murel - Managing Director at TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico.

How to find a safe plastic surgery center in Mexico?
Your choice of plastic surgeon is a choice you live with for years, if not your entire life. A successful procedure will make you feel incredible and give you greater confidence for years to come. On the other hand, ending up in the hands of an inexperienced doctor increases your chances of having complications and poor results, which can lead to additional costs, time, and heartache.
Never compromise on your safety to save money, and make sure you have critical information about your plastic surgeon, the procedure, the place where the surgery will be performed and post-operative care.
Finding a board certified plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience in your procedure of choice is critical to getting the results you desire but the place where your surgery will be performed is not less important. Before you have any type of surgery overseas, you have to make sure that your procedure will be performed in an accredited facility. To receive accreditation, a hospital or medical center must adhere to strict standards for staff, sanitation, equipment, and patient care set forth by an official accrediting body, and it must submit to regular inspections and provide thorough records of their policies and procedures to retain accreditation.
Therefore, an accredited center will ensure that your surgery you will be performed:
- By Board Certified Plastic Surgeon - By qualified, trained and experienced support staff
- By a fully qualified and certified anesthesiologist
- In a clean, fully equipped operating room
- In an Adequate personnel and equipment to respond to emergency situations.

Why are plastic surgeries cheaper in Mexico?
Why Mexico is an Affordable Option for Plastic Surgery? Surgery in Mexico is less expensive due to lower labor and real estate cost but there are many other reasons why plastic surgery is cheaper in Mexico.
The cost of medical school education is Mexico is cheaper (Doctors in US have extensive debt which is part of the cost of surgery).
Malpractice insurance in US are very expensive, increasing the cost of surgery. (Some of them can cost several hundred thousand dollars a year). National malpractice insurances for plastic surgeons in Mexico are around 60% - 70% less expensive than in the US.
Hospital stays in Mexican hospitals cost around $200 a day whereas in the US the cost is usually over $1,500 a day for the same services.
Operating room fees for plastic surgeons in the US is about 20x the cost of the operating room in Mexico.

Guidelines for Cosmetic Surgery Abroad
“What plastic surgery do I need” | How do you know what plastic surgery to get?
There are many plastic surgery procedures available to improve your face and body.
When establishing realistic expectations for plastic surgery, it is important to understand the improvements the procedure can provide. For example, you might be considering liposuction when a tummy tuck is necessary.
However before asking yourself “What plastic surgery should i get", ask yourself if you are a good candidate for plastic surgery.
You will be able to have a surgery performed only if you are healthy, you have reasonable expectations, and you know the risks of the surgery you are considering.
Patients with health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, bleeding disorder, heart disease, obesity or depression are not good candidates for plastic surgery.
Smoker or people who drink too much alcohol can have a surgery performed only if they stop smoking and drinking for 3 weeks before surgery and at least 4 weeks after surgery.
It is very important to tell your doctor about everything you take, even vitamins and herbal products that don't require a prescription. Some may affect bleeding risk or interfere with other medications used during surgery.
Once your surgeon confirmed you are a good candidate for plastic surgery, and you are at the right age for the procedure you have chosen you can take a decision about the surgery you should perform.
Remember that a surgery won't stop the natural aging process. During your first consultation be open about what you want, but be willing to listen to your surgeon’s recommendations. He may recommend you a different procedure to achieve a similar result.
What age can you get plastic surgery in Mexico?
We frequently hear the question “How young is too young for plastic surgery?”
In Mexico there are no specific laws in that prevent teenagers from getting plastic surgery; however, parental consent is required for patients under the age of 18.
If your teenager wants a plastic surgery, he /she must show maturity and understand the procedure, risks, consequences and what limitations the recovery period will require.
However, if the surgery is reconstructive in nature to improve health or correct a severe deformity; a person is never too young to have surgery.
What are the common plastic surgeries we perform on Teens at TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico?
Most of plastic surgery procedures can be appropriate and safely done in selected teenagers. However, at our facility we refuse to perform some procedures in patients less than 18 years.
For example, we consider that breast implants surgery is not recommended for younger than 18 except in case a teenage girl has tuberous breasts, which means the breasts did not develop during puberty, in that case she will be able to have teen breast implant surgery.
However, breast implants may not apply to teenage girls with Poland syndrome, where the breast muscle is under-developed.
Rhinoplasties / Nose job (the most requested procedure by teens) can be performed from age 13 or 14 (in girls) and from 15 (in boys) because this is when the nose has completed 90% of its growth.
Breast reduction can be performed on girls younger than 18 with overly large breasts if it causes back and shoulder pain, and restrict physical activity. However, it is recommended to delay the procedure until the breasts have reached full development.
In some boys, excessive breast development can become a significant problem. In those cases, the excess tissue can be removed through a Ginecomastia surgery from 15.
Otoplasty (ear pinning) – This surgery can be performed from age 6.
Liposuction: Although there is no law regarding the minimal age at which it can be done, we recommend to wait until 18 years old. In exceptional circumstances, liposuction surgery can be performed between 13 to 17 years, if the teenager is experiencing low self-esteem or anxiety because of unsightly bulges in the body. However, the surgeon will have to consider if your body is fully developed or not.
17 years old Teenager patient - Rhinoplasty / Nose job package in Mexico Surgery Cost: US$2,500
Is there an age limit for plastic surgery in Mexico?
No. It is never too late to get a plastic surgery. Advancements in surgical techniques are helping aging patients to look and feel more youthful through innovative procedures for face and body.
Cosmetic surgery in old age is as safe as it is for younger people if you are in good health conditions. Therefore, you can have a surgery performed even if you’re 65 or above.
Our surgeons’ primary concern will be to see whether the benefits of the surgery outweigh the risks.
How to prepare for plastic surgery in Mexico?
In the days or weeks leading up to your surgery journey, it is important to follow certain pre-surgery general guidelines:
• Arrive at Mexico 24 hours prior to your surgery. Having a surgery overseas can be very stressful. Arriving a day before your surgery will give you time to relax and calm instead of hurried and flustered.
• Stop smoking for at least 3 weeks before and 4 weeks after the surgery.
• Stop taking vitamin supplements 10 days before and after your surgery.
• Avoid supplements, foods, and drinks that slow blood clotting, such as aspirin or green tea.
If you were taking Diuretics (water pills), steroids or Accutane during the past year, or now, or if you are taking any supplements or medications you will have to say it to your surgeon.
• Do your blood tests in your home town, not more than 30 days prior to the scheduled surgery date. Based on the results, the surgeon will decide if you can carry out your procedure or not.
• Be well hydrated before your surgery to decrease the risk of dizziness and nausea after anesthesia and to decrease inflammation after surgery. We recommend you to drink at least 2 liters of water or Gatorade every day for at least 4 days before procedure.
• To prevent blood clots in your legs we recommend you will have to walk often after surgery. During your return flight we recommend you to walk at least 5 minutes every hour and in case you cannot walk, it is necessary to pump your foot up and down like you are pushing on the gas pedal to simulate walking.
• Buy your protein before travelling. Getting 100 grams of protein per day for 2 weeks before and after your procedure will help decrease any surgery risks by up to 40%. You can buy snacks-protein or shakes and protein bars.
• Increase your physical activity 10 days before your plastic surgery to lessen the risk of any complications.
• Take sufficient time off of work to ensure an optimal surgical experience and recuperation.
By staying in Mexico City, you will have an opportunity to regain your strength, visit your doctor for postoperative visits, and ensure there are no significant side effects.

How to get time off work for cosmetic surgery?
Having a plastic surgery is a very personal decision and you may not want to tell everyone that you’re having one… including your boss. It makes things more complicated if you need to ask for time off work.
However, we can help you keep your surgery a secret while also getting the required time off work, because some companies allow their employees to take time off for medical reasons. You could check it with your HR department.
How we do it? Simple. Some procedures require you to be restricted to your bed or homebound for two weeks or more. You can tell your boss you are having a procedure for medical purposes. They cannot ask about why you need the time of or what surgery you’re having.
What to tell work when having plastic surgery?
For example, instead of saying you are going to perform a rhinoplasty, you can tell you are planning to have surgery to repair a deviated septum. For a tummy tuck you can tell you have fixed a hernia.
Remember you will be able to work remotely after your surgery. Today more people are working from home than ever before, so your boss can be perfectly okay with you working via your computer from home as you recover from surgery.
All Inclusive Mommy Makeover Package:
Breast Lift + Implants + 360°Lipo + Tummy Tuck
+ 12 days in a 4**** hotel

After your surgery
After your surgery, your surgeon will prescribe oral pain medication to manage your discomfort. Your body will need time to heal and you will have to rest and relax in your hotel room for a few days.
That’s why choosing TopPlasticSurgeonsMexico and our All Inclusive Plastic Surgery Packages for your plastic surgery vacation is a great option! Making our patients' surgery stay safe, pleasant and provide you with a stress-free experience is our number one priority.
During your recovery at hotel a doctor (not a nurse) will visit you in your hotel room every day to check your health condition; she will help you change your bandages and help you with anything you may need during your recovery time at the hotel.
What should you pack for your plastic surgery in Mexico?
• Your medical history documents including: Blood tests results and details of complications during any surgical procedures that may have arisen in the past.
• Your medicine (in case you follow a special treatment for Diabetes, High BP, Alzheimer’s etc. Appropriate quantities of prescribed medications should be taken along).
• Loose clothing, Slippers and a fluffy robe in order to feel comfortable while you recover (important for body surgeries)
• A gentle laxative in case the traveling or the surgery causes constipation.
• Post Surgery Garment. We recommend you to buy your garment prior to departure because you will need it right after your surgery. If you wait to be in Mexico to buy it there is a risk because there may be sizing issues.
• Travelling with someone is recommendable but not indispensable. First because you can have someone to help out, but above all because we have found that patients heal faster with someone there to provide moral support.
What medications I have to stop before and after plastic surgery?
2 weeks before and after your surgery you will have to stop:
• Asprin, Ibuprofen and NSAIDs (e.g., Advil, Aleve, Motrin and Nuprin). These medications affect the way your blood clots. However you can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain and aches if necessary.
• Stop vitamin E and multi-vitamin containing vitamin E.
• Stop herbal supplements (e.g., echinacea, ephedra, feverfew, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, goldenseal, kava-kava, licorice, saw palmetto, St. John’s wort and valerian) because they inhibit the clotting and healing process.
What to DO before your surgery?
• Start taking vitamin C. Take 2,000 MG per day 2 weeks before your scheduled procedure.
• You can take Arnica Montana to reduce post-surgery bruising.
• Take a shower with an antibacterial soap the morning of your surgery.
• Bring with you loose fitting clothes that you do not need to pull over your head in order to put on or take off.
• Remove the fingernail on the index finger of your right hand so that we may attach the monitoring equipment properly.
What to NOT DO before your surgery?
• Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to the morning of your surgery.
• Do not wear makeup, lotions or perfume to surgery.
• Do not wear fingernail polish to surgery
